On July 8, 2016, El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen delivered public comment about the Black Lives Matter group. In response, Veronica Escobar organized a letter asking that El Paso City Council repudiate Allen's comments. The Escobar letter was signed by various elected officials. Martin Paredes filed an open records request with the County of El Paso seeking documents held by then-County Judge Veronica Escobar under the Texas Public Information Act on August 24, 2016. Escobar refused citing that her actions were not "official" County business.
